In a remarkable personal breakthrough, a local resident has experienced a significant improvement in managing breathlessness caused by pneumonia, offering hope and insight to others battling similar issues.
The journey began in April 2025 when I contracted pneumonia and experienced persistent breathlessness. Drawing from a childhood memory, I recalled a comment from a Reader’s Digest article where a man expressed a wish that he had heeded advice to breathe deeply and hyperventilate to develop a barrel chest and a small waist. Inspired by this, I decided to apply this breathing technique, which I believed might help with my recovery.
However, as my nursing cousin Lois explained, hyperventilation can sometimes cause more harm than good. “Breathlessness can also be caused by a panic attack when you hyperventilate,” Lois said. “You feel like you can't breathe, but really, you’ve been breathing too much, and it just feels like it. You need to make an effort to slow down your breathing if this happens. You can blow off too much carbon dioxide, which makes you feel like you can't breathe.”
Last night, I experienced a breakthrough. Instead of hyperventilating, I consciously slowed my breathing, and to my delight, I slept better than usual—completely free of breathlessness. This realization that my previous breathlessness was self-inflicted has been a game-changer.
Praise the Lord for knowledgeable nurse second cousins! This experience has reaffirmed that knowledge and truth truly is power. By understanding the proper way to breathe and managing panic responses, I have taken a significant step forward in my recovery.
This personal story underscores the importance of seeking expert advice and listening to knowledgeable voices in healthcare. It also offers hope to others facing similar respiratory challenges.
