What do they expect when they ban scate parks. monkey bars and playgrounds. And then force them to social media and then ban that too?

Good on the US Congress which is seeking the Australian e-safety commissioner to face Congress because she’s got dual citizenship

US Congress is seeking the testimony of Australia's eSafety Commissioner, Julie Inman Grant, over concerns that Australia's online safety laws threaten American free speech protections. While Ms. Inman Grant holds dual Australian and US citizenship, it is her US citizenship that the Congressional committee is leveraging to compel her appearance, not the reason for the inquiry itself. Bravo for the First Amendment.

Key Details

* Who is seeking testimony? Republican Congressman Jim Jordan, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, which is investigating "foreign censorship regimes".

* Why? The committee is concerned that the Australian Online Safety Act (OSA) and Ms. Inman Grant's efforts to enforce content takedowns (including previous attempts to force global removals of content) could set a precedent that impinges upon American citizens' constitutionally protected free speech rights (First Amendment).

* The Role of Dual Citizenship: The US Congress does not have the power to compel foreign citizens to testify. However, since Ms. Inman Grant is a US-born dual national, the committee has asserted that complying with congressional oversight is a public duty for all US citizens, including those residing abroad.

* Current Status: Ms. Inman Grant has so far declined to attend an interview, stating she is "not in a position to attend". In response, the US Congress has threatened to pursue "additional steps" to obtain her compliance, potentially including contempt charges, if she fails to appear. Her office has maintained that Australia's laws (which accept geoblocking as a compliance method) do not affect content served to Americans.
